*English translation below

Cho Publications

At AMATA, we have something known as “study groups”.
Cho Goro is the sort of guy who has the same reaction as a lot of folks—“Ugh, studying? No way, Jose!
But hold on just a second! The study groups at AMATA are a little different.
They cover topics from work as well as hobbies that have nothing to do with our jobs.
I wanted to know more about these groups so I asked a studious colleague of mine to tell me more about it. This was when I heard about a particular study group that is often held here:

“Reading groups”.

The reading group gives you chance to get together and talk about books we’re interested in, and about those we want to recommend to others. So today, I have a story about a book.
(With such a long set-up, the actual story not being about study or reading groups, is I think, very much like Cho Goro.)

So everyone, when you read a book, why do you choose that particular book?
It goes without saying; it’s because you’re interested in it!
Maybe books relating to your tastes, or books
you read in a hurry just for the study group.
Of course, it’s the same for me; Cho Goro!

However, in the past 10 years or so, my criteria for choosing books has slightly changed.

Let’s say you read a book because you’re not interested in the subject matter. You’ve probably never considered doing that, right?
But I do like to read these kinds of books.
As you might expect, they do end up boring though haha.
I mean after all, I wasn’t interested in the subject in the
first place.

Just think about it for a second though. If a draft or an idea has made it to the publishing stage, that means that there are at least some people who would be interested in it.
A worldview that draws in a select few
of hardcore fans…does that not pique your interest?
In this category, there are some books which really hook you in.
It’s a great opportunity to open up a whole new world of knowledge!
Even this happens to me, as great as Cho Goro may be.
But that’s a story for another time.

As for the second category, it’s a very straightforward one.
It’s: “books recommended to me by other people”.
It probably makes up close to about 50% of the books I’ve read.
The main reason for this is simple—“I want to understand how this person thinks”.
I sometimes meet distinguished folks who have been around the block a few times, or those who are just overall interesting.
So I like to read the books they recommend to me.
This could be anything from self-help books, to leadership help, or business tips. Anything you can imagine.
In the beginning I would just read them without much thought; just word by word. But gradually I would begin to understand the words and thoughts of the person who recommended it to me. The general gist of it at least.
The most surprising part was a time when I found myself suddenly convinced about something I was previously frustrated about.

It may be kinda hard to understand without knowing what it’s like, but after taking in several self-reflections, I went from “I don’t get it… isn’t that impossible? ” to “Even if it does seem impossible, we’ve got no choice but to move forward, right?”

What’s even more interesting are the connections between the books.
I would be reading a book recommended to me by someone else, and come across a sentence like: “In the Grand Journey of Such-and-Such by So-and-So, there is a passage like this…”
Pretty much, it means that the author is telling us about a book that has influenced them.
Then you go and read that book, only to find that there is a reference to yet, another book. That’s the connection I am referring to.
To feel like you’re listening to a lot of people’s thoughts; it’s a wondrous feeling.

Books are truly amazing!
But it’s also a dangerous spiral down the rabbit hole. *sweats*

One more thing to add – I’ve recently gotten into picture books as well; books I read as a child.
If you read them as an adult, you can get other different meanings in the story, which is quite interesting.

“Oh…I guess I’ve become a dirty old man… ”
