Unite Tokyo 2018

*English translation below

【UniteTokyo 2018 Series 7】Attending the Unite Tokyo 2018 as a Non-Programmer

Hello everyone. I am an operation designer, TAKA.
Although I am neither an engineer nor artist, I still decided to attend this event for the first time in order to broaden my perspective as well as to gain experience for future operations and development!
That being said, I felt nervous going by myself, and I thought this might be an opportunity to help the younger members, so I had Haa-san, a younger operation designer, come with me.

I attended for 2 days, from May 8th to 9th. I made myself attend speeches throughout the day since it seemed to be a good challenge.
However, many of the speeches were like “this code here is bad for this reason… So we should do this instead!” Nevertheless, I think I was able to learn from the concept and the thinking behind it.
Blogs written by professional programmers and artists would probably provide a better insight to the technical aspect of the event. So I will write about other aspects instead.

Since Unite was all about projects developed with Unity, most discussions were about games. However, there were some speeches about different applications.
I actively took part in those speeches as well, in order to broaden my perspective.

First of all, among all the speeches, there was one by the famous Toyota Motor. I, of course, just had to attend that one.
The speech was in Room 4, which was quite small compared to other rooms of Unite, but it was absolutely filled with people, including in the S seats where you need to pay extra. Most of them were from the media.
That’s the world-renowned Toyota for you; people would gather just from hearing the name… is what I thought to myself.
The speech was about how Toyota used Unity to create all kinds of experimental contents in VR. It did not directly relate to the gaming industry.
That being said, there won’t be many chances like this to hear from people in different fields, and it could prove useful in the future, so I made sure to keep the content of that speech in my memory.

Other than that, Unity and HoloLens were also used in the field of architecture to create mixed reality(MR) contents to aid development.
In the future, people might be able to use HoloLens to view a life-sized building at its actual location in MR before it is built.
Nevertheless, creating something as large as an actual building will require an enormous amount of data that our current level of hardware just cannot handle.
Additionally, the usage of HoloLens is also limited depending on the real-life environment (weather, sunlight, etc.), meaning there are still technical obstacles to overcome. Even so, possible use cases for the HoloLens is slowly but surely increasing.
In the not too distant future, all construction sites might be using HoloLens and MR in their construction.

There were also HoloLenses at the exhibition for us to try on, and I got my first taste of MR!
MR, different from VR which covers your entire vision, is realized by projecting objects into the lens of a device that looks like a pair of glasses. Making you feel like the objects is actually in the real world.
For that reason, even though I was looking at the object, when people (Haa-san in this case) stood in front of me, my eyes would not focus on her and it was slightly unsettling, as Haa-san told me afterwards. I did not notice the people standing in front of me at all since I was looking at the object.

And so, although this was totally unrelated to gaming, it was very eye-opening for me learning that people outside the gaming industry were using the same tools as us, and that there were many different ways to use them.
I would say mission accomplished in terms of broadening my perspective, as I got to know an entirely different world from that of my own. Finding ways to utilize this experience in the future becomes a new task that I have to undertake.
I will do my best in searching for the answer.
