Cho Camping Biker: Setting Off on a Journey

It’s the sort of thing that seems very silly, but is actually just insincere.
The sort of story that sounds like one big delusion, but in truth is just crafted fiction.
That is just the sort of content I aim to slather your senses with.

Hi everyone! Exhausted blogger Cho Goro here.

I realize this is a bit sudden, but I just got back from camping!

I didn’t go out there on a tour, it was just a camping trip. So I didn’t do any sightseeing or anything like that. And to think, it was such a pain getting my bags on a 110cc bike in the last article on my rehearsal…so why did I go? *chuckles* If you can believe it, this was not an act by Cho Goro alone. No, I went camping with Nico, an artist at AMATA.

So the reason why I went out on a bike even though it was so hard during the rehearsal? Well, because Nico had a car. (lol)
We went to the place I scoped out in the rehearsal part. It’s an easy spot to find, so we arranged to meet near the campsite. The reason we didn’t meet at the campsite itself was to fill a tank with water from a nearby fresh spring. You need different water for cooking when you go camping, you know.

So we met up, got the water, and arrived at the campsite around 10 o’clock. It was a Saturday morning, so no one else was around. Nico and I looked around the area and decided on what seemed like the best spot to set up.

I dug a small hole between Nico’s tent and mine, put down a decently-sized rock, and set it up for a campfire. We were just out in the wilderness, so the “no open flame” rules you see at organized campsites are no issue here. On the other hand, that means the sewage, toilet, and signal reception options are also less than stellar. (lol)

We were already pretty pooped by the time we got done setting up the camp. It was still only the afternoon, and we were hungry, but couldn’t quite muster the strength to move.

We stuck our feet in the river, and just lazed about for a bit. We were in no mood to use our brains. For a moment, we thought it might just be easier to order delivery, but alas, there was no reception! At this point we came around to the fact that just sitting around wasn’t very productive, and decided to prepare lunch. We tried to make something in a mess tin…only to fail!

So we had some canned foods and chicken for lunch, and it all went pretty well with some beer. Here, the large net Nico brought along proved to be very useful.
We tidied up after our meal, and headed upstream. After a short distance, there was a waterfall, and we could go no further. But it sure was refreshing and cool! ♪

We really just let the time pass us by. That’s the whole point of camping, really. And no one else was around, almost like we’d rented the place out just for ourselves. It was a fantastic way to spend a day off. The heat of the day passed, and then it was dark out.

Now’s when we really got our drink on! I took the block of beef I bought and cooked it with beer, and gave the mess tin another try. This time without too much difficulty. Of course, I went and bought way too many ingredients, and with no way to use all of them we just sat around the fire and lazily talked for hours.

This is Nico in the photo. As you can see, the surrounding area is pitch black.

If you step away from the fire you can see a beautiful starry sky, but the sky is just a bit brighter if you look towards Tokyo. The sounds of the birds at night (owls?) and the flowing wind and river set the scene. The crackling of the fire is the only man-made noise to be heard. This is peak relaxation time.
After this and that, it was about midnight before we knew it. We’d been chatting quite a bit since the sun went down, and figured we ought to hit the hay…

But!!! Here’s where we had a huge problem!!! Are you familiar with “cots”, dear readers? You know, those simple bedding materials for camping. I brought this cot, and thought I’d get a good night’s sleep on it, until…
Here’s how it looked.

I went pale. My memory of making a karaoke room came rushing into my mind. A time when I said, “you know, there’s no way a huge karaoke machine can fit through an entrance this size”. Yes, it was just like that. *sweats* *sobs* So, I took it apart and attempted to set it up from inside the tent, but in doing so I had to exert myself a lot (as the tent is quite small) and became drenched in sweat. I managed to get it done in the end, but I’ve now awakened to the fact that cots cannot be used inside tents. It’s a truly painful realization…

I’d gotten all sweaty, so I just kinda stared into space for another while longer, and eventually fell asleep for my first and last night on a tent cot.

The next morning I started getting some toast ready. I dumped some ham, egg, and tomato on that toast, added a sprinkling of salt and went to town on that bad boy!

After breakfast was more staring-off-into-space time. I cleaned up my foodstuffs and hung my sleeping bag and other stuff over a rope.

Until it was time to head out I would relax some more, and then get going just before the afternoon.

It was my first camping trip in a long while. I had a great time. What’d you think?
For camping out in the wilderness, I’d say the fun you have isn’t all that different from just going to a campsite.

Up until now, I’ve gone solo for these trips, but sometimes it’s nice to go with others too, I think. I’m still thinking about what I should do with the 110cc bike, and conversely, I’ve never camped at a campsite myself, so I’ve started thinking it could be worth trying.

Cho Goro does camping in Autumn, Winter, and Spring—if I’m going with friends, Summer’s fine too.

p.s.
In a previous article, I wrote that I put on my rain gear, got on a bike, and got drenched from my butt to my groin. An acquaintance of mine asked if I only wore a rain suit on my upper body. Normally, you wear both tops and bottoms, right? But I’ve double-checked my memory, I’m very certain I was absolutely soaked there. How can this be???

Actually, at the time I wore a poncho rather than a full set of rain gear. I used it in place of a small tarp, as a simple fly sheet inside a tent, or as a way to cover both me and my stuff on the bike. That’s why I used a poncho.

This explains why my memory of my lower body being unprotected by rain gear, and consistently wet, came back to me so vividly.
But…now that I think about it, wearing a poncho on a motorbike is a bit dangerous. *sweats*
