*English translation below

AMATA Staff Talk Japanese Film, No. 3 Tremble All You Want

I am tomocarl from the sound section of AMATA K.K. back again, a certified Mayuite (my own idea).
“Mayuite” is a nickname I created for fans of the actress Mayu Matsuoka.
My selection this time is Mayu-chan’s first feature-length production, 2017’s “Tremble All You Want”.
I saw it for the 3rd time the other day just to refresh my memory~. ^o^/

<Summary>
Office worker Yoshika is someone who, to put it mildly, has no self-confidence and is just kinda bad at life. She even sympathizes with an ammonite fossil at one point, believing she too is on the road to extinction, just like a fossil.
It goes without saying, but she’s also quite a late bloomer when it comes to romance. Her only experience of it was in junior high, when she had a crush on a classmate named Ichi (his name, but also carries the meaning of the number “one” in Japanese).  However, this was only a one-sided crush , and Yoshika was never even a blip on Ichi’s radar.
And even now at 24 years old, she continues to hold that crush dear to her heart.

Then one day, she is confessed to by a co-worker by the name of Ni (whose name also carries the meaning of the number “two” in Japanese).
She was happy beyond words. Not because she was in love with him, but because this event finally allowed her to gain a sense of self-confidence.

She got a bit ahead of herself.
She even entertained a fantasy of having two boyfriends: Her true love, Ichi, and his runner-up, Ni.

After picking herself up again after a certain incident, she had an idea.
Ni, who is close at hand, and Ichi…not wanting to miss out, she decides to try and pursue her true love!
And so, Yoshika begins to plan a school reunion in order to meet up with Ichi.

I wrote that summary myself. *sweats*
After all, if I mention that part
then it’ll basically be a spoiler.
(But I do write some spoiler-y stuff later on, so if you would like to avoid them, take the ejector seat right about now!)

So it’s a story about our very self-deprecating heroine, who cannot decide between her love fantasy, and the real one that is before her.

The first half is just a fun romp!
Yoshika talks with the people she meets in her spare time or on her commute with a smile, and her interactions with co-workers are full of laughs. The theater was full of giggles.
(As an added bonus, if you like Tamori Club, you’re bound to laugh about 300% more lol)

However, the story takes a sudden turn.
She learns that all of her happiness was just a lie, all to the tune of song.
(The 2-minute segment where this truth is revealed is also quite appealing on a technical level!)

The now-exhausted Yoshika ends up turning down the help of Ni and her good friend Kurumi. She finds herself alone, and comes to know isolation.

Along with Yoshika on the big screen, we in the audience are made to think about what isolation truly means.
And then, the smartphone she reaches out in struggle, begins to deliver a fantastic message~!

Ah, just recalling this scene, I tr-tremble so!
I’ll say this as many times as I must, but fantasy is AWESOME!
The musical parts, the phone, it’s all fantasy!
But just to be clear, the red post-it note is NOT fantasy!

…Excuse my selfish trembling.
This is a film which does a great job of contrasting scenes with each other.
It received a longer run and wider screening than originally planned, so if you have an opportunity, please go see it and tremble for yourself!
A truly “oh”verwhelming masterpiece from Director Ooku!
