*English translation below

「The Heart of Tokyo」

【18 New Faces Series⑫】What Makes Shinjuku So Fascinating

AMATA is around Shinjuku, a place known overseas as The Heart of Tokyo. I went to a vocational school in Shinjuku for 2 years and I have been working here for 3 months, and now I basically just hang around Shinjuku every day!

Let’s take a look at some of the exciting spots that I came across in the past two and a half years.

Nishi (West)-Shinjuku

Towers and office buildings called Skyscraper (super high-rises) are the kind of buildings you will mainly come across in Nishi-Shinjuku. Exactly what a city should be like.

・The Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building Observation Room

View as seen from the observation room in the North Tower

Walking time from AMATA: 15 minutes
Opening hours: 9:30 ~ 23:00 (hours may vary depending on which Tower you choose to visit)
Being the third tallest building in Tokyo, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building is approximately 243 meters Admission is free. Enjoy the beautiful views that Tokyo has to offer – free of charge.  Visitors can choose to visit either the North or the South Tower. The views are the same as seen from either Towers, but the shops and cafes are different.
Rumor has it that you can even see Mount Fuji when the weather is nice, but I have yet to see it with my own eyes…

Higashi (East)-Shinjuku
On the east side, there are more things to buy and restaurants to dine at than on the west side.  Kabuki Cho is particularly popular among overseas visitors. Let’s check out what else Higashi-Shinjuku has got.

・Shinjuku Gyo-en

Walking time from AMATA: 25 minutes
Opening hours: 9:00 ~ 17:00 (admission open until 16:30)
Enjoy partying under the cherry blossom in spring and marveling at the red leaves in autumn – among all sorts of seasonal events.
In Shinjuku, there are big parks on both the east and the west sides. I like Shinjuku Gyo-en, which has been around since the Edo Period, because of the space this place offers.
I always see families hanging out here on weekends.

・Hanazono Jinja Shrine

Walking time from AMATA: 15 minutes
I don’t really know what people can do at a shrine, but it’s probably a good place to go to if you are looking for a place to take a walk for some fresh air.
Japan’s festival season is coming up, so you get to enjoy some delicious takoyaki (octopus balls) if you come!

・Shinjuku Golden Gai

Walking time from AMATA: 15 minutes
This is a street with old American-style pubs that you don’t commonly see in Japan! Most of the pubs here are pubs with counter seats, and occasionally some bartenders will even show you some of the bar tricks they have up their sleeve.
There are even clubs with karaoke.
There are also hot springs (bath houses? spa? ) around the Golden Gai. It costs a bit to get it, but it’s a place you may consider paying a visit to on days you want to be a little nicer to yourself.

The company covers me for my commute to Seibu-Shinjuku Station, so I just go to Shinjuku all the time – both on weekdays and weekends!

Also, though I’m not eligible, the company also offers rental support allowance if you live less than two stations away from here.

Shinjuku has got a lot more to offer. I really want to show you some movie theaters and some good izakaya, but I think I will stop here for now.

Please leave your comment below if you know other interesting places in Shinjuku!
