That One Time I Couldn’t Have Been More Wrong

It’s the sort of thing that seems very silly, but is actually just insincere.
The sort of story that sounds like one big delusion, but in truth is just crafted fiction.
That is just the sort of content I aim to slather your senses with.

Good day everyone, the ever-whimsical Cho-goro back again with a piece to share.

I’d like to share with you a part of our culture here at AMATA.
Specifically, our No Smoking policy.

We live in an age where an honest man can’t even have a puff of tobacco where he likes.
I suspect it is next to impossible for non-smokers to understand just what kind of corner smokers have been driven into.

My first interaction with tobacco was when I was 20 years old (that’s what the law says, anyway).
At most, I would smoke about a pack or two per day.

For more than half of my life cigarettes have been right there by my side, so to speak.
You could say Cho-goro is “tobacco”, and “tobacco” is Cho-goro.
We were just that close.

Then I was hired at AMATA, and after half a year, quit smoking.
As of today I’ve been clean for over 2 and a half years–let me tell you, no one saw that coming!
Ask any one of my old pals, they will swear up and down “there’s no way in hell Cho-goro quit smoking”.
Worry not, dear readers…because I can’t believe it myself. *sweats*

So basically, at AMATA it’s prohibited to smoke while you’re at work.
I was originally hired at  AMATA on the recommendation of a certain acquaintance of mine, but they hid the existence of this rule from me, all while knowing I was a heavy smoker.

I first found out about the rule on my first day at work. Upon whinging about this to my friend, he said, “But  Cho-goro, if I told you in advance, you would have never come here, am I right?”
…Sufficed to say, I learned exactly what they mean by “intent to kill”.

From then on I dealt with the struggles of going clean every day, wondering if I would stay or quit…  It was a rough period to say the least.

And then one day, after about half a year, I made up my mind!

“Alright, I’ll tell the boss just what I think of this rule! I’ll protest!”

As I keep going on this tangent, I’m sure folks are just thinking up some baseless argument like:
“He’s just saying this because he wanted to smoke his cigarettes”
And uh, well, you’d be right, I guess. *sweats*

That’s what I mean by having “made up my mind”. After all, I had I quit smoking.
“I don’t want to smoke at all, no sir.”
“But for the people who do smoke, this is just causing them pain!”
“Isn’t it kind of hard to watch?”
“Boss, you just don’t understand because you don’t smoke!!!”
“No, no, I’m not just saying that because I want to smoke.”
“I really mean it, I am absolutely NOT just saying this because I want to smoke!!!”

Yeah, it would go something like that.

It was a grand decision, after having lost all will to smoke, then and only then would I tell our boss about the situation.

I had to embark on an path of endurance unlike any before in my life.
That one guy who always suggests I have a smoke appearing in my dreams, staggering after the alluring scent I catch a whiff of after passing by another smoker, standing under the ventilation fan of a restaurant with smoking seats without realizing it.

I overcame this period of crisis and gradually my time spent clean went on.
It was about a year after quitting that it arrived–a very fortuitous chance.
Just by coincidence, the boss and I were walking home along the same street.
As we were shooting the breeze in the train, we naturally got onto the topic of smoking, if you can believe it!

I, Cho-goro, geared myself up, there was no way I could let this chance slip away!
“You’ve been waiting just for this kind of chance, haven’t you?”
“Tell your non-smoking boss he has no idea what kind of struggles smokers go through!”
“With passion! You tell him,  Cho-goro!!!!”

And just what did he have to say?
“Hmm, you know back in my day I used to smoke 2 or 3 packs a day…”

I, Cho-goro, was truly at a loss for words…

And so, I continued to stay clean, and here we are today.

A no-smoking rule, huh…
I-I guess it’s not so bad, right? *sobs all over keyboard*
