*English translation below

【18 New Faces Series ⑨】We’re letting everyone know how great it is working at AMATA!

Nice to meet you!
I’m Mou, I started working at AMATA back in April, fresh out of school.
It’s been four months since I joined the company and I’m currently assigned to AMATA’s creative division, working as an artist.
Foreigners joining a Japanese workplace for the first time are probably anxious about a lot of things.
Before I came to work at AMATA, I was worried that there wouldn’t be any other foreigners among the new-grad hires.
I’d never experienced working in an environment with only Japanese people, and even when I’d done my study abroad as a student, I was surrounded by people who came from a similar cultural background as me.
However, those worries disappeared the moment I met the rest of the people who’d been hired along with me.
Of other freshly graduated artists in my cohort at AMATA, three out of the five were foreigners. (I thought it was a very high ratio
.)

First of all, AMATA thoroughly trains their new hires.

The thing that made the biggest impression on me after joining AMATA was their robust training program!
Right after being hired, I began training both in-house and out.
For artists, the training lasted about one month in total.

It started with business manners.
We started with the foundation of communication and logical thinking that every member of society needs, and built from there to learn the business card exchange techniques and phone etiquette essential to the working world.

Afterwards we continued on to practice in a group.
Group
training involved breaking into groups and working together to make an actual minigame, so we had to create cost estimates before starting, and achieve good results in a limited time period as a team, instead of just trying to complete individual goals.

The last portion of training focused on technique, and we learned the basics of how to use 3DCG software like Maya, Photoshop and Spine.

In addition to all that, we also carried out collaborative training with another company.
The on-the-job training they gave us was so complete that even a foreigner like me was able to handle work on the ground right away.
We were assigned to projects right after our training period ended.
Even once I was in the actual working environment, I kept finding more and more to love about AMATA.

The Self-Directed Learning Policy

Even for new hires, AMATA provides a lot of chances to get directly involved with different kinds of work with a growth policy that allows you to grow your own skills while getting experience in anything AMATA has to offer.
Coming to recognize what you’ve built up within yourself through these various experiences, knowing that even if your job role changes that you’ll be able to handle things, that you’ll be able to contribute… I think it’s an incredibly valuable benefit to the shape of your future career.

Supervisors and Senior Employees Proactively Help New Grads

ver since the day I joined the company, I have strongly felt the consideration, kindness, and warmth that the more senior employees have shown.
Even during training my supervisors and the senior employees always answered my questions with kindness, even taking the time to explain Japanese I didn’t understand.
And of course, the foreigner senior employees also handle their own tasks, and were very helpful to me whether during training or after I started work in earnest.
Looking at their example, I know that next year I’m going to do what I can to help the next round of new hires, instead of tapping out with the excuse that I’m a foreigner.

Not only that, but the company has six departments that are established to support the employees, so for example, if there’s some kind of equipment malfunction or other trouble, it’s easy to bring the issue to someone’s attention and have them handle it.

AMATA is Global

AMATA has a pretty high number of foreigners, having gathered people who love games from all over the world, no matter from what region or of what nationality, becoming a place where barriers to ideas and imagination can be overcome, in the belief that the environment created can’t fail to produce fun and interesting games.
Not only that, but AMATA doesn’t engage in any kind of special or different treatment just because someone’s a foreigner, treating us just the same as our Japanese colleagues.
I believe that here, foreigners have the same access to chances as anyone else.
Since the day I started, I’ve had the same high expectations placed on me as were placed on the Japanese hires, and it’s really helped increase my motivation at work.
It’s part of what drives me to want to create the kinds of things that will exceed expectations.

Employee’s Voices Are Valuable

As a company, I believe AMATA truly values its employees.
AMATA holds regular interviews with its workers.
It’s all one on one, so you can get help and support with everything from where you’d like to be assigned, to job worries and developing your skills.
Plus, there are weekly meetings even for the projects.
During these meetings, they often check on members’ progress along with sharing information and checking on the overall progress on the project.
We’re also quite close with our design team members, and the whole company has a homey atmosphere that I think helps work develop smoothly.
I believe that building on the growth of individual employees is directly connected to AMATA’s own growth.

It was this that immediately alleviated my worries about joining a workplace filled with so many others with different cultures.
Four months after being hired, I have a pleasant working environment and get a great feeling of worth whenever I fulfill the expectations placed on me, letting me really enjoy coming to work everyday.
