中の人の邦画放談⑨ 「志乃ちゃんは自分の名前が言えない」

こんにちは、音響課のtomocarlです。
前回紹介した「カメラを止めるな！」が歴史的大ヒット作になり、次にどんな映画を紹介したらよいか悩ましく…。
う~ん、こういうときは自分の趣味全開しかないな。
今回は、直球で青春のコンプレックスをぶつけてくれそうな「志乃ちゃんは自分の名前が言えない」にしました！

ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー
（あらすじ）

高校新入生の大島志乃は人とスムーズに話すことができない。
一人だと話せるのに、誰かと話そうとすると途端に”どもってしまう”のだ。
自己紹介でもその吃音が発症し、クラスメートの失笑を買ってしまう。

友達をつくるきっかけを失った志乃だったが、ひょんなことから、校舎裏に巣くうロック好きの少女・岡崎加代と知り合う。
彼女もある症状で志乃同様に”みんなができることが、できない”と悩んでいた。

友達となった志乃と加代は、２人の”できない”を補いあうバンド「しのかよ」を結成。
お互い１人だったら絶対に立てないであろう文化祭ステージを目標に、路上ライブ行脚をスタートさせた。

「しのかよ」は順調だった。
場数を踏む毎に２人のアンサンブルは成熟し、志乃の歌声は観客に届くようになっていた。

そして、順調だったのはバンドだけでなかった。
志乃の吃音も徐々に治ってきたのだ。

ところが、行脚最後の路上ライブで、同級生の菊池と出くわしてしまう。
彼こそが、入学早々の志乃を笑いものにした男子だ。
菊池は、茶化すようなオーバーリアクションで２人の歌を褒めまくった。

嫌な記憶をフラッシュバックさせた志乃は、「しのかよ」で積み上げてきたものすべてをその場に置いて逃げてしまう。

文化祭に向かって、志乃・加代・菊池の関係はどうなる？

志乃ちゃんには、吃音になりやすい音があって、それが名前に含まれているから、自己紹介で失敗してしまったのです。
（自分も、名前の音のならびが悪いので、志乃ちゃんの気持ち、すっごい分かります！）

でも、音のならびが吃音の直接の原因ではありません。
吃音の原因は、志乃ちゃん自身「わからない」のです。

志乃はちゃんは悩みます、
「わからない、わからない。
自分だけ、みんなができることが、できない。
なんでだろう、わからない」と。

せっかく仲良くなった加代とも、この「わからない」が邪魔をして…
おっと、これ以上はネタバレですね。

でも敢えてネタバレギリギリで書いちゃいますね。
「みんなができることが、できない」のは志乃ちゃんだけではありませんでした。
その人の勇気が、志乃ちゃんを変えます！

この映画、ステキな歌唱シーンがたくさんあります！
吃音症ヒロインに、印象的な歌唱ーそれで思い出したのが、映画「心が叫びたがってるんだ。」。
「志乃ちゃん」と「ここさけ」、見較べるのも楽しいと思います！

AMATA Staff Talk Japanese Film, No.9 – Shino Can’t Say Her Own Name

Hello again, it’s tomocarl from the Sound Department.
Last time I talked about One Cut of the Dead, which was a breakout hit film, so it was hard to figure out where to go from there in terms of what kind of film I should talk about next.
When I’m feeling conflicted like this I usually just jump full steam ahead, into my own interests.
So without further ado, I’d like to talk about Shino Can’t Say Her Own Name, a film that takes a clear and hard-hitting look at the complexities of growing up.

(Summary)

High school freshman Shino Oshima has tremendous difficulty talking to people.
She can get the words out if she is alone, but all she can do is stutter when she tries to talk to other people.
When she steps up to introduce herself to her class at school she gets lost in a fit of stuttering, which stirs up a snide burst of laughter from her classmates as she struggles to get the words out.

Shino misses out on her chance to make friends, but she stumbles upon a chance encounter that leads her to get to know Kayo Okazaki, a rock ‘n’ roll-loving young girl who hangs out behind the school.
Much like Shino, she is also affected by a particular disability, and they both harbor the same troubled sentiment: “I can’t do what everybody else can.”

After they become friends, Shino and Kayo decide to form a band called “Shinokayo” to help compensate for the things they “can’t” do.
They set their sights on taking the stage at their school’s culture and arts festival, something that neither of them could ever pull off on their own, so they start performing a series of streetside gigs to prepare.

Their band Shinokayo ends up being a success.
Over time the two girls each have their own experiences and mature along the way. This leads the way for Shino to find the ability to reach out with her voice and sing in front of an audience.

And so, their band isn’t the only thing that’s a success.
Shino’s stuttering problem gradually fades away, too.

But, during their last streedside performance they run into Kikuchi, who happens to be in the same class.
Kikuchi was one of the boys who laughed at Shino and made her a laughing stock when she first arrived at school.
Kikuchi profusely praises the two girls’ singing in a way that comes off as sarcasm.

Shino flashes back to her painful memories and sets off to walk away and leave all of Shinokayo’s accomplishments behind right then and there.

With the arts festival on its way, what will become of the relationship between Shino, Kayo, and Kikuchi?

Shino’s name has syllables in it that are easy to stammer on, which is why she stumbles trying to say her own name when she introduces herself.
(My own name also has syllables that gives me trouble to pronounce, so I can really understand how Shino feels!)

However, the syllables stringed together in a word aren’t the direct cause of the stuttering.
Shino herself doesn’t get why she stutters.

Shino worries to herself, “I don’t get it, I don’t get it. I’m the only one who can’t do what everyone else can. I just don’t understand why.”

This feeling of not understanding why comes between her and Kayo, who have both come a long way to become good friends.
But well, saying anything more than that would venture into spoiler territory.

Shino isn’t the only person who is worried about not being able to do what everyone else can.
There is somebody else, and it is this person’s courage that can change Shino’s outlook!

This film has a ton of awesome singing scenes!
The film’s stuttering heroine showcases some impressive singing; it reminded me of the film “The Anthem of the Heart.”
Speaking of which, I think it would also be a lot of fun to compare Anthem with Shino!
