*English translation below

Movie Extras

AMATA is a game company, but it is also a video production company that, as a member of the production committee, is planning and producing FINAL FANTASY XIV Dad of Light. I get calls from the shooting set asking things like if I’d like to volunteer as a movie extra. The other day I finally took up on the offer, and appeared in a scene. I have over 10 years experience in the game industry, but this was a first for me!

First, I’m given a brief such as, “The month is XX, you are a guest at a certain event, wearing outdoor clothing.” I imagined a variety of clothes to match this, and was suddenly struck by the thought that extras in so many movies are using their imaginations to create a part of the depth that we see on screen. Being a total gaming nerd, all I thought about during preparations were:  “this is what it must feel like to participate in a livestream broadcast of a themed-avatar VR event.”

Our call time was at 8:00am, but the shooting for the extras actually begun at around 9:30. One thing that made a deep impression on me was the prop design. On the set of the film where this fictional event was to be held, there were pamphlets and  posters of two kinds of different designs, that captured the vibe and atmosphere.
They had made all kinds of tickets specially made for the fictional event, such as tickets for normal entry, and tickets for advanced booking. These tickets even had the name of the made-up sponsoring organizations, right there to catch your attention. The level of detail was astounding!

Even though video games are heavily influenced by movies, we rarely produce games with the same level of detail. (because even if we create those kind of assets, the details would be lost due to screen resolutions etc. there are cases where localisation is an issue as well). Still, with technology advancing everyday, and high resolution displays as well as VR becoming an everyday thing.
I have a hunch that as a part of that process,  players will be able to come as close to any objects as they like.
The  things we have to learn from movies will once again, increase.

Back to the movie shoot; for the next shoot…it didn’t come for a few more hours. The director and staff were busy moving around, but it felt like we extras spent about 70-80% of the day waiting in chairs in the backyard. I heard all kinds of stories from the extras belonging to different industries.

At 3:00 PM, we finally got the call. It was our turn. We were a little tired of waiting, but because of that, everybody put all of their energy into their one, single moment on the screen.
The last thing was the background recording. We devised and unleashed our best ad libs for the scene’s background chatter. And that’s a wrap.
“In the film industry, waiting is part of the job,” said the producer; it was a final, deeply impressive revelation. Filmmakers, I salute you.
